Globally, around 300 million tons of plastic waste are produced yearly, but only about 9% is recycled. In the United States, the recycling rate is slightly below the global average at 8.7%. Developing countries face more significant challenges, with even lower recycling rates due to inadequate infrastructure and resources. This disparity highlights the urgent need for global cooperation and investment in waste management infrastructure. It's crucial to develop policies and initiatives that encourage the reduction, reuse, and recycling of plastic materials to protect our environment and ensure a healthier planet for future generations.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) involved in plastic recycling and regeneration play a vital role in environmental sustainability. By recycling plastic, these enterprises contribute to significant carbon emission reductions and save crude oil usage. However, they face challenges in participating in carbon credit trading due to stringent review processes and high verification costs. This situation calls for a more inclusive approach to recognize and reward the contributions of these SMEs in mitigating environmental impact.
